QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Feb. 19, 2016) - Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED)

The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for CED, announced today that the Government of Canada has awarded a non-repayable contribution of $51,000 to the Groupe Pentathlon for nationally and internationally marketing the International Triathlon Union's (ITU) first World Cup Winter Triathlon. The event is part of the programming for the 12th Pentathlon des neiges, the world's largest multi-sport winter competition.

Quick facts

  • The competition will run from February 19 to 21, 2016, and will combine three disciplines: a snowshoe race, skating and cross-country skiing.
  • CED's support for this world first will help publicize Quebec's winter attractions internationally. Media reports will be produced and broadcast in various languages on a number of specialized channels in Europe.
  • The event is made possible through the cooperation of a number of public and private partners.
  • The ITU's first World Cup Winter Triathlon will be held in various places including the Plains of Abraham skating rink, which will help emphasize the originality of the event.

"In addition to the Pentathlon des neiges, Quebec will also host another large-scale sports competition. In fact, the ITU's first World Cup Winter Triathlon is a unique competition in the world. It represents the expertise of local organizers and their ability to develop innovative projects. As well as bringing about significant media and tourism benefits, our support for the marketing of this world first is helping publicize the Greater Quebec City Area abroad."
