Government of Canada Provides Financial Support for Commercialization of Innovations Developed in Greater Québec City Area


QUÉBEC CITY, QUÉBEC--(Marketwire - Feb. 6, 2012) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, announces that five technology enterprises from the Greater Quebec City area will be receiving financial assistance in order to commercialize their products internationally.

"In investing in the commercialization of leading-edge technology solutions and in supporting entrepreneurship," stated Minister Lebel, "the Government of Canada is providing proof positive of its firm commitment to economic growth built in particular on innovation and knowledge."

Whether they operate in the applied technology sector or in life sciences, health and nutrition, whether they are in startup or growth phase, the enterprises in question are contributing to the global outreach of Canada's science and technology knowhow.

The repayable contributions totalling $450,000 announced today are being provided under Canada Economic Development's Business and Regional Growth program. They are part of total investment of $1,348,000, and will foster the development of regional assets that are deemed to be a priority.

Feldan is a young, innovative firm in the life sciences sector which manufactures and commercializes, for therapeutic or research purposes, recombinant proteins, i.e., proteins produced by a cell whose genetic material has been modified. These proteins are used in particular in research, development and production of medical drugs. Feldan's worldwide clientele consists of laboratories, government or teaching institutions and pharmaceutical or biotech companies.

Repayable contribution of $88,000 / total investment of $400,000 to commercialize Smart SMS in Canada and the United States. Smart SMS, is an adaptive sound-masking system which helps enhance confidentiality and acoustic comfort in open-plan offices. Soft dB is an innovative SME in the applied technology sector. It offers products and services designed to control, measure and analyse acoustic or vibratory signals.

Tekno Replik Inc. (Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures)

Repayable contribution of $80,000 / total investment of $250,000 to commercialize, to dentists in Canada, the United States and France, an innovative dental restoration solution. Combining lasers and 3D digitization, the system developed by Tekno Replik produces dental inlays in a single step through micromachining. These dental inlays, manufactured in particular from ceramic material, are durable alternatives to the amalgams (grey fillings) or composites (white fillings) used by dentists. Tekno Replik is a highly innovative startup in the applied technology sector.

Repayable contribution of $50,000 / total investment of $100,000 to commercialize an innovation in geomatics, in Brazil, France and Canada. Intelli3 designs and implements novel solutions combining cartography and business intelligence (BI) in order to analyse and exploit easily and rapidly large quantities of spatial and descriptive data in the form of dynamic maps. The firm's spatial BI (geo-decisional) systems are used for managing the financial, human and physical resources of different government departments and municipal and port agencies, and in the ground transportation, marine transportation and public health fields.

Repayable contribution of $165,000 / total investment of $500,000 to commercialize, in Europe, Asia and Oceania, digital vision systems for the inspection of transportation infrastructure. Created in November 2009 as a strategic spinoff from national optics institute, INO, Pavemetrics has an exclusive worldwide licence to use INO's road inspection technology. The company commercializes systems used to detect, inspect and evaluate road features automatically, thus optimizing road maintenance and repair operations and improving road safety.
