Government of Canada and Province of Saskatchewan Announce Saskatchewan's RCMP Policing Contract to Be Renewed

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Aug. 31, 2011) - Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews and Saskatchewan Minister of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing, D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert, today announced that the federal and provincial governments have reached an agreement to renew Saskatchewan's RCMP policing contract for another 20 years. The announcement was made at an official signing ceremony in Regina today.

"Today is a significant milestone for RCMP Contract Policing," said Minister Toews. "I am very pleased to announce that after almost four years of negotiations, the Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan have reached an agreement that will continue the relationship between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the people of Saskatchewan for the next two decades."

"We in Saskatchewan are proud to have the members of the world's most recognizable police force as part of our past and of our future," Saskatchewan's Minister of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said. "This agreement is an example of how partners can work together and provide the people of Saskatchewan with the kind of policing they expect by officers and an organization that has earned their trust."

"Now that we have reached agreements with Saskatchewan and Alberta, the Government of Canada looks forward to reaching similar agreements with the remaining provinces and territories before the end of November 2011," said Minister Toews. "The terms of the Agreement reached with Saskatchewan represent excellent value to Canadians and are available to all contract provinces and territories."

The Government of Canada has been working with the provinces and territories for almost four years to arrive at a draft agreement that addresses the interests of all parties, including key issues such as governance and accountability. These agreements will ensure that communities continue to receive the most efficient, effective and sustainable police services possible. The Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta previously announced the Alberta Agreement at a signing ceremony on August 19, 2011.
