The Government of Canada Reaches Agreement With Mexico and the U.S. for Livestock Exports

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - March 27, 2008) - The Government of Canada is delivering for farmers to obtain greater market access for the beef and livestock industries. The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, today announced that Canada, the U.S. and Mexico have reached an agreement harmonizing North America to the World Organization for Animal Health's (OIE) standards for trade in bovine breeding stock that will also allow Canadian cattle to be shipped through the U.S. to Mexico.

"The Government of Canada is committed to working with our neighbours in the United States and Mexico to secure OIE-consistent trade for beef and livestock in North America and around the world," said Minister Ritz. "This agreement is good news for farmers in all three countries who will now have access to world-class livestock from anywhere in North America."

This announcement comes on the heels of the Minister's trip to Washington to meet with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer. Minister Ritz and Secretary Schafer discussed issues and objectives shared by industry on both sides of the border. These included normalizing beef and cattle trade in North America, the U.S. Farm Bill legislation, mandatory Country-of-Origin Labelling and market access issues for potatoes.

"Canada and the U.S. are each others' most important trading partners and farm families in both countries benefit from our close relationship," said Minister Ritz. "Our Government is committed to continue our productive and respectful dialogue with our American neighbours for the benefit of Canadians who depend on our agriculture and agri-food industries."
