Government of Canada Supports Fredericton Legion in Effort to Remember Canadian Forces Members Who Died in Afghanistan

FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Oct. 18, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs took part today in a ceremony to unveil a new monument dedicated to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice serving in Afghanistan. The monument is a project that was spearheaded by The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4.

"We have a sacred duty to honour our men and women in uniform and to remember the great debt we owe these remarkable Canadians," said Minister Thompson. "Our Government is proud to support groups and organizations like The Royal Canadian Legion as they deliver remembrance activities and events that have a real and lasting impact on Canadians."

The ceremony included the monument unveiling as well as a traditional remembrance service and wreath laying. Local Veterans, family members of those to whom the monument is dedicated, still-serving Canadian Forces members and numerous youth from local schools attended the ceremony.

Minister Thompson announced that The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 received $1,650 to help with the unveiling ceremony. Today's ceremony is one of 28 community-led remembrance projects newly funded by the Government of Canada through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund. So far this year, $94,950 has been invested in remembrance projects nationwide. Applications to the Community Engagement Partnership Fund are accepted throughout the year from non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events.
