The Government of Canada Supports the Reseau de developpement economique et d'employabilite de l'Ontario

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 11, 2009) - Mrs. Shelly Glover, Parliamentary Secretary for Official Languages and Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface, is pleased to announce $2 million in funding for the Reseau de developpement economique et d'employabilite de l'Ontario (RDEE Ontario) under the Enabling Fund for Official Language Minority Communities.

Mrs. Glover made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

"The Government of Canada is committed to enhancing the development and vitality of Canada's official language minority communities," said Mrs. Glover. "The Enabling Fund is the cornerstone of our efforts to provide support to these communities in terms of employability and community economic development, as well as to promote linguistic duality across Canada."

This funding will enable RDEE Ontario to support the contribution that Francophones are making to the economy and their full participation, and help immigrants integrate into the Francophone labour market. The funding will also be used to develop Francophone tourism projects and complement the work of other community economic development organizations in Ontario.

"This funding will enable RDEE Ontario to encourage creativity and entrepreneurship among Francophones in urban areas, as well as those in more remote areas who receive fewer services in French," said Ms. Nicole Sauve, Executive Director of RDEE Ontario. "This financial assistance demonstrates the Government of Canada's confidence in its Francophone population's ability to come up with innovative solutions to meet the specific needs of the various regions."

The funding is being granted under the Enabling Fund, the objective of which is to enhance the development and vitality of official language minority communities (OLMCs) by strengthening capacity in the areas of human resources development and community economic development, and by promoting partnerships at all levels.

The Enabling Fund plays a facilitative role by helping OLMCs develop community projects and access additional sources of funding for those projects. The organizations that receive financial assistance under the Enabling Fund have obtained additional funding from various sources and have implemented a large number of projects based on the needs of OLMCs across Canada.

Investments to date have supported the creation of partnerships, the preparation of community economic development plans, and capacity building. As a result, OLMCs have been able to take advantage of opportunities and address unique issues in order to ensure that resources are used to best meet the needs of Francophone communities.
