Government Discussing Potential Transfer of Ste. Anne's Hospital

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 28, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, confirms that the Government of Canada has begun preliminary discussions with the Government of Quebec toward the potential transfer of Ste. Anne's Hospital.

"It has been a long-standing policy of the Government of Canada to transfer federal hospitals to provinces. A potential transfer of Ste. Anne's would provide long-term benefits to Veterans, Hospital staff and Quebec residents alike," said Minister Thompson. "Transferring Ste. Anne's to the Government of Quebec would maintain the Hospital's impressive and expanding expertise in geriatrics and increase bed availability for other Canadians in need."

Senior officials from both governments met last week to start discussions on the preparatory work to negotiate a transfer. Contrary to at least one media report, a purchase by a private enterprise is not being considered. Employees, residents and their families and other stakeholders will be kept informed throughout the process.

Any future transfer agreement would ensure that Veterans continue to have priority access to quality of care and services, as was the case in the Government of Canada's previous 17 successful transfers.
