Government Funding for Alzheimer's Research Key to Generating New Knowledge

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 28, 2011) - Today the Government of Canada announced funding of $8.6 million for new research on Alzheimer's disease. Neurological Health Charities Canada (NHCC) supports this work and the generation of new knowledge about the brain, brain degeneration and the experience of living with a neurological condition such as Alzheimer's disease.

It is estimated that 1 in 6, or more than 5 million Canadians are living with a neurological condition today, for which there are limited treatments and no cures.

"Canadians living with a wide range of neurological conditions share remarkably similar experiences, needs and issues," says Joyce Gordon, Chair of the NHCC. "We appreciate the Government's continued investment in brain research and recognize the important role that research can play in improving the lives of millions of Canadians living with a neurological condition."

Today's funding announcement will support 44 research projects from various researchers across the country, approved by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Established in 2008, Neurological Health Charities Canada is a coalition of 24 health charities that work together to improve the quality of life for all Canadians living with a neurological condition. The NHCC advocates for a comprehensive National Brain Strategy to ensure research, prevention, treatments and supports for those living with chronic brain conditions are universally accessible and appropriately funded.
