Government House Leader John Baird and MP Andrew Saxton Consult With Hardworking Canadians on the Economy

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Jan. 14, 2011) - Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, John Baird, and Member of Parliament for North Vancouver, Andrew Saxton, met earlier today with small business owners and working families from the Persian community in Vancouver, to discuss job creation and economic growth as Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Government plans for the next phase of Canada's Economic Action Plan.

"The economy remains the number one priority of the Prime Minister and our Government," said Minister Baird. "Our Government will continue to focus on creating good jobs for Canadians, preserving the retirement savings of seniors, and improving the financial security of all Canadian families."

Launched in 2009, the Economic Action Plan has so far contributed to the creation of more than 440,000 new jobs since July 2009 and helped the country emerge from the global economic crisis faster and stronger than the majority of major industrial countries around the world.

"It is clear that the Economic Action Plan is working," continued MP Saxton. "It has created thousands of jobs and provided financial security to Canadian families through the worst global recession since the Second World War."

Minister Baird also warned that the Government will not jeopardize the fragile economic recovery by adopting proposals that would increase the burden on Canadian families.

"Higher taxes and increased spending will kill jobs, threaten growth and create economic instability and uncertainty for hard working Canadians and their families at the worst possible moment," continued Minister Baird. "That's why our Government is committed to protecting and sustaining Canada's fragile economic recovery by staying the course and continuing to implement the next phase of the Economic Action Plan."

Over the coming weeks and months, Minister Baird, MP Saxton, the Prime Minister and our Government will travel to towns, cities and communities across the country to listen to Canadians and seek their views on how to best continue building jobs and economic growth from coast to coast to coast.
