Government Investment Confirmed for Northern Hub

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Aug. 3, 2012) - Manchester Airport Group has hailed the announcement that the 'Northern Hub' is to be funded in full by the UK Government.

The Northern Hub is a £540million project made up of a series of works across Northern England, the aim of which is to stimulate economic growth by improving rail services. The green light for the project was given on Wednesday 25th July, which once completed is expected to add over £4.2billion of economic benefits for the North of England.

Chief Executive of Manchester Airports Group (MAG), Charlie Cornish said: "Today's announcement is an essential step in improving rail transport across the whole of the North of England. The improvements will provide better connections to towns and cities across the North of England into growth centres such as the new Airport City enterprise zone and provide better access to the international air links provided from Manchester Airport. That in turn will give businesses across the north better access to the global marketplace and allow the Northern economy to develop further on an international setting."

Upon completion, the scheme will specifically create better access to Manchester Airport, helping passengers across the region from towns like Rochdale and Halifax and will also provide better connections from cities such as Liverpool and Leeds.

Additional capacity in form of an extra rail platform will also be provided at Manchester Airport as well as additional capacity at Oxford Road and Piccadilly train stations in Manchester City Centre.

The scheme falls squarely in the Government's policy of rebalancing the country's economy outside the South East, as it will benefit other growth points in the North West, including the Enterprise Zone at Manchester Airport.
