VICTORIA - British Columbia Minister of Finance Michael de Jong, on behalf of and with other members of the Council of Ministers, will announce important developments toward the implementation of the Cooperative Capital Markets Regulatory System.

British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Yukon and Canada are jointly working toward the establishment of the Cooperative Capital Markets Regulatory System. The Cooperative System is designed to streamline the capital markets regulatory framework and strengthen Canada's capital markets by providing better protection to investors, enhancing Canada's financial services sector and managing systemic risk.

The Council of Ministers, co-chaired by B.C. Finance Minister Michael de Jong and federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver, began its inaugural meeting in Victoria, B.C., today. In addition to the two co-chairs, members of the Council of Ministers in attendance are: Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa; Saskatchewan Justice Minister and Attorney General, Gordon Wyant; New Brunswick Justice Minister Stephen Horsman; and Yukon Community Services Minister Currie Dixon.
