Government of British Columbia: Traffic Advisory

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 15, 2011) -

Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure

VICTORIA – Motorists are advised that Highway 1 will be closed on Saturday night between Sicamous and Revelstoke so crews can complete repairs to the Malakwa Bridge, east of Sicamous.

The closure will begin at 9:30 p.m. Saturday and last until 6 a.m. Sunday. The closure points are at Malakwa, 17 km east of Sicamous, and at Highway 23 in Revelstoke. Motorists are asked to plan their trip to accommodate this closure.

Travellers may detour via Highway 23 South between Revelstoke and Nakusp using the Upper Arrow Lakes Ferry, and via Highway 6 between Nakusp and Vernon using the Needles Arrow Lake Ferry. Travellers using this detour route should allow for over six hours travel time and expect higher than normal traffic volumes and some delays at each ferry crossing.

Travellers are advised to access for up to date information on this planned closure.

The Malakwa Bridge was damaged in a crash on April 9. As a result, the bridge had been limited to single lane traffic and one commercial vehicle at a time. Once repairs are complete, the bridge will reopen to full capacity.
