Government of Canada Announces $9.9M Contract to Refit CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 20, 2006) - A $9,980,775 competitive contract has been awarded to Victoria Shipyards Company Limited, of Victoria, British Columbia, to refit the Canadian Coast Guard vessel CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Awarded on behalf of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, this contract will be completed in April 2007.

The announcement was made today by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands, on behalf of the Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services.

"This Canadian Coast Guard vessel is the only operational icebreaker stationed on Canada's West Coast," said Minister Lunn. "Making sure that this and other vessels in the fleet stay in top form is an investment in our environment and ecological heritage."

The work to be conducted within this contract will contribute to enhance the vessel's capabilities and extend its effective operational life. The company will carry out extensive maintenance and repairs including internal and external cleaning and painting, electrical and mechanical repairs, installation of new systems and improvement of the icebreaking hull structure.

Build in 1986, the CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier is a light icebreaker based in Victoria which is designed for both open ocean and moderate ice-covered ocean conditions.
