Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages Shelly Glover today announced the appointment of Simon Brault as Director and CEO of the Canada Council for the Arts for a term of five years, effective June 26, 2014.

  • Mr. Brault was first appointed to the Canada Council for the Arts as Vice-Chairperson on March 31, 2004 and was reappointed on March 31, 2009 for a second five-year term.
  • Mr. Brault has been Chief Executive Officer of the National Theatre School of Canada since 1997.
  • A leader in the Montréal arts community, Mr. Brault is the founder of Journées de la culture. He is also a founding member of Culture Montréal and has been its elected Chair since it began in 2002.
  • Mr. Brault is the recipient of the 2009 Keith Kelly Award for Cultural Leadership by the Canadian Conference of the Arts. He is also an Officer of the Order of Canada, an Officier de l'Ordre national du Québec, and a fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountant Order (CPA).
  • Mr. Brault holds a Bachelor of Science in Law and Accounting from the Université de Montréal.
  • The Canada Council for the Arts is a federal Crown corporation created by an act of Parliament in 1957. The role of the Council is to foster and promote the study and enjoyment of the arts and the production of artistic works.
