Government of Canada Announces Funding for Wharf Repairs in Gull Harbour, Manitoba

GULL HARBOUR, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Feb. 21, 2008) - James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will invest $25,000 in the structural repair of the commercial fishing wharf located at Gull Harbour.

"The federal government is committed to ensuring safe and functional harbours in Manitoba," said James Bezan. "Maintaining our harbours in good condition is essential for fish harvesters and their community."

The project consists of replacing the bulkhead to the existing wharf and installing a timber wharf to provide a safe offloading facility for the fish harvesters. Public Works and Government Services Canada has tendered this project and the work will be completed prior to the end of March.

This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the Gull Harbour Harbour Authority that manages and operates the facility for local users. This close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fish harvesters.
