Government of Canada Announces Support for Festival Grand Rire de Quebec

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - June 5, 2009) - On behalf of the Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism), the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced the Government of Canada's investment of more than $950 000 to support le Festival Grand Rire de Quebec.

"This funding is exciting news to all involved in le Festival Grand Rire de Quebec," said Minister Verner. "The assistance from the Marquee Tourism Events Program highlights the Canadian government's recognition of the immense impact that Grand Rire de Quebec and other such marquee events have on the visitor economy."

"Industry Canada's contribution represents significant financial support. It will allow us to create and present a diversified product with the potential to be a major tourist attraction. In turn there could be benefits at an international level for le Festival Grand Rire," said Sylvain Parent-Bedard, President of le Festival Grand Rire de Quebec.

Le Festival Grand Rire de Quebec features 26 days of programming, including theatre, improvisation, stand-up comedy, music, film and more. The Festival will inject the Tier 1 funding from the Program into its marketing efforts, which will include an enhanced international media campaign. Programming additions, such as the Place d'Youville component, will enable the Festival to present new shows that are bigger, unique and exclusive to this large outdoor stage.

Following the recent Marquee Tourism Events Program (MTEP) summer 2009 funding announcements, the Tier 1 stream will provide funding for those events attracting an overall attendance of at least 250 000 visitors. Among other eligibility criteria, these destination events were selected based on their track record of success, including a marketing strategy to reach out to international tourists. Additional projects are being reviewed under both Tier 1 and Tier 2 funding streams, and successful applicants are expected to be announced at a future date.

Luminato Festival 2009 is also receiving funds today under the MTEP Tier 1 stream. Funding for today's recipients is conditional upon the completion of a contribution agreement satisfactory to the Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism).

The Government of Canada, through the Marquee Tourism Events Program, is investing $100 million over two years to assist marquee events across the country. This budget funding will help event organizers expand their reach and promote Canada as a must-see tourist destination to visitors from around the globe.

The MTEP is one of several tourism-related programs in the Government of Canada's Economic Action Plan. These programs provide measures to support Canada's economy, stimulate the growth of tourism and contribute to the development of Canada's visitor economy over the long term. They include:

- $40 million over two years to the Canadian Tourism Commission for domestic and international marketing; and

- $150 million over two years for national parks and historic sites.
