Government of Canada Celebrates International Volunteer Day

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 5, 2011) - The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today marked International Volunteer Day by expressing her gratitude to the millions of Canadians who give generously of their time to help others.

"Volunteers play a key role in our Government's vision of building a smarter, more caring Canada where everyone works together to support families and children and to reinforce learning and innovation," said Minister Finley. "International Volunteer Day is a wonderful opportunity to recognize volunteers' contribution and thank them for strengthening communities everyday."

The value of Canadian volunteers' time is estimated to be around $14 billion annually.

To recognize the exceptional contributions of volunteers and organizations working to improve the well-being of families and communities, last January the Government announced the creation of the Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards. The first recipients will be announced in 2012.
