Government of Canada Congratulates Canada's Film Industry

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 10, 2011) - Every year, Canada's producers, directors, writers, actors, technicians, and other film professionals demonstrate their outstanding talent and creativity. Through the lens of a camera, they give us stories that move us, make us laugh, or make us think. The success that their films have achieved in Canada and around the world clearly demonstrates the quality of their work. We are proud to pay tribute to them and highlight their accomplishments. For more than three decades, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television has also done this through the presentation of the Genie Awards.

Our Government understands the importance of supporting Canada's film industry. This innovative industry contributes to the quality of life of Canadians and is a driving force behind the vitality of our culture and our economy. In 2009–2010, the film and television industry accounted for close to $5 billion in production activity in Canada. In terms of jobs, it employs more than 117,000 people. Canadian films tell our stories and show the entire world that Canadian filmmakers are among the best on the planet.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to commend all the professionals of the Canadian film industry. I offer my sincere congratulations to this year's nominees and award winners on this well-deserved honour.
