Government of Canada Creates Jobs Through Defence Infrastructure Projects in Quebec

CFB VALCARTIER, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Aug. 25, 2009) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, today announced an investment of $108.8 million in defence infrastructure in Quebec, which will create significant economic benefits for the region.

These infrastructure projects are located in Valcartier, Bagotville, and Montreal and will generate hundreds of direct employment opportunities over the course of the work.

"These investments represent more great examples of this Government's significant contribution to building infrastructure across Quebec," said Minister MacKay. "This investment in infrastructure provides the Canadian Forces with the tools they need to do the important jobs that we, as Canadians, ask them to do."

The projects include Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) III Facilities in Montreal and Valcartier; a variety of projects including a new headquarters for the Land Forces Quebec Area Instruction Centre and a new fire hall for CFB Valcartier; and a transportation, electrical and mechanical engineering services garage at 3 Wing Bagotville.

The Government of Canada is conducting open, fair, and transparent competitive processes in order to award the construction contracts for the projects located at CFB Valcartier, DRDC Valcartier, CFB/ASU Montreal, and 3 Wing Bagotville.

In line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to update and replace dated defence infrastructure to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The Government's significant investments in defence infrastructure provide economic benefits to communities across Canada.

The Department of National Defence holds a large number of properties all across the country to support the Canadian Forces, including some 21,000 buildings, 2.25 million hectares of land, 5,500 km of roads, and 3,000 km of water, storm and sewer pipes.
