Government of Canada Funds Coupe des Nations 2013

SAGUENAY, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - June 6, 2013) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, announces that the Coupe des Nations was granted funding for the promotion of this year's cycling competition, which takes place June 7 to 9.

"By lending financial support to the 2013 edition of the Coupe des Nations, the Government of Canada is showing proof of its commitment to fostering the growth of tourism, a profitable sector for the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean economy," said Minister Lebel.

The Coupe des Nations is an integral part of the Coupe des Nations U23 series (cyclists under the age of 23) and the only one to be held outside of Europe. This international competition is an important tourism showcase for Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

The funding served to promote the race in an effort to attract more cycling enthusiasts to the region. The event's organizers are also hoping to benefit from positive international media coverage in order to draw attention to Saguenay as a prime tourist destination.

"Our government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and of course, their personal financial security," Minister Lebel concluded.

This assistance, granted in the form of a $40,000 non-repayable financial contribution, has been awarded through Canada Economic Development's Quebec Economic Development Program.
