Government of Canada Funds Restoration Project in Northern Alberta

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 21, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, announced today federal government support for a project in northern Alberta to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Clyde Remembrance Day Group received funding for the restoration of the Village of Clyde Cenotaph. The cenotaph honours all Canadian men and women who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Funding provided by Veterans Affairs Canada's Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program will help resurface the entire cenotaph and replace the commemorative plaque. The cenotaph will also be moved to a more central location.

"Memorials are more than structures of stone and mortar," said Minister Thompson. "They represent sacrifice and honour. They provide community members with a place to gather in recognition of those who served on their behalf. Most importantly, they carry on the importance of remembrance for future generations."

"Throughout our history, the courage and sacrifice of our veterans came to define the Canada we know today-a nation strong, free and proud," said Minister Ambrose. "The Village of Clyde Cenotaph is a fitting tribute to our veterans, honouring their heroism and reminding us all of the precious price they paid to secure our way of life."

The Government of Canada is providing more than $197,760 to 19 community-led cenotaph and monument restoration projects across the country through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program. Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
