Government of Canada Funds Restoration Projects in British Columbia

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 21, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, announced today federal government support for two projects in British Columbia to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The City of Pitt Meadows received funding for the restoration of the Pitt Meadows Cenotaph, part of a major park revitalization project organized by the City. Cowichan Valley Regional District received funding for the restoration of the Cobble Hill Cenotaph in Liberation Park. The cenotaph will be completely cleaned and the area will become more accessible for the public.

"Memorials are more than structures of stone and mortar," said Minister Thompson. "They represent sacrifice and honour. They provide community members with a place to gather in recognition of those who served on their behalf. Most importantly, they carry on the importance of remembrance for future generations."

"The restoration of our local cenotaphs brings new life to our communities. They will continue to represent a place of honour for our local service men and women, past and present," said Minister Day. "Supporting memorial restoration projects is one way that the Government of Canada is ensuring our Veterans are remembered in communities across the country."

The Government of Canada is providing more than $197,760 to 19 community-led cenotaph and monument restoration projects across the country through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program. Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
