Government of Canada Funds Restoration Projects in Central Ontario

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 16, 2008) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, announced today federal government support for four projects in Central Ontario to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"Memorials across the country tell the story of our communities and they honour our nation's truest heroes," said Minister Thompson. "Our Government is proud to support these projects and ensure that our Veterans are recognized and remembered by future generations."

"It is our sacred duty and responsibility to remember and honour the brave men and women who have always served Canada so selflessly" said Minister Flaherty. "I am pleased that the Government of Canada is supporting these remembrance initiatives."

The Central Ontario projects are part of a national funding announcement Minister Thompson made earlier today. The Government of Canada is providing funding to 19 community-led cenotaph and monument restoration projects across the country through Veterans Affairs Canada's Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program.

Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
