Government of Canada Funds Tribute to Veterans

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 15, 2008) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety and Senior Minister for British Columbia, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, a contribution of up to $5,000 to the Burnaby Village Museum. The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support British Columbia Day activities that pay tribute to the 55th anniversary of the Korean War cease-fire and the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

"Local Burnaby students will produce heritage displays with a military theme and present them to museum visitors, as well as participate in the opening ceremonies with Veterans," said Minister Thompson. "The youth participation in these events is gratifying and very important if we want future generations to continue honouring our Canadian service men and women."

On British Columbia Day, August 4, the museum will feature static and mobile displays, historical interpretations and musical band performances. The activities will also include an off-site event at the new Korean War monument unveiled last year in Central Park, Burnaby. Veterans and officials will be transported in an antique military convoy to the monument for a remembrance service.

"Interactive family events such as these are a great way for Canadians to honour and remember those who served our country," said Minister Day. "The activities will paint a vivid picture for Canadians to better understand the contributions our Veterans made and continue to make to Canada."

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
