Government of Canada Grants $152,120 to Corporation Camp Spirit Lake

TRECESSON, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - July 8, 2010) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced $152,120 in non-repayable funding to Corporation Camp Spirit Lake, the organization responsible for the management and presentation of the former Spirit Lake internment camp. Granted through the Community Diversification program, this financial assistance will be used for the creation of an interpretation centre.

This project will serve to heighten the historical value of the site and strengthen the tourism offering in the region. The City of Amos and surrounding municipalities are expected to benefit from the spinoffs generated by the increased number of history buffs visiting the area. Indeed, the camp at Spirit Lake has all of the potential needed to draw a great many tourists from Quebec and around the world. One new permanent position and several summer jobs will be created as a result of this initiative.

A detention centre where 1,200 people were interned between 1915 and 1917, the camp at Spirit Lake is a unique site that played a distinctive role in Canadian history. As such, the new interpretation centre will be dedicated to preserving, protecting and interpreting the historical significance of this important cultural heritage site for the region.

"The Spirit Lake internment camp is a part of our history and a key element in the development and colonization of this corner of Abitibi. That is why it is essential that its memory be preserved. Adding an interpretation centre to this complex is sure to improve the local tourism offering, contribute to job creation and further the growth of the municipality of Trécesson. Canada Economic Development believes it is important to support the development of tourism in Abitibi because investing in this sector means promoting the region's economic recovery," explained the Minister of State.

This Corporation Camp Spirit Lake project is also in direct alignment with the objectives of Canada's Economic Action Plan, a series of measures put in place to stimulate the national economy.

The Community Diversification program established by Canada Economic Development is aimed at funding projects undertaken by Quebec regions to sustain and develop their economic activity.
