Government of Canada Grants $24,758 in Funding to Tourisme Abitibi-Temiscamingue

AMOS, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 22, 2010) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of $24,758 in non-repayable funding to Tourisme Abitibi-Témiscamingue for the organization of its conference, called "Prenons les devants" (Taking the lead).

This event, which will take place in Rouyn-Noranda this coming April 20 and 21, will be an opportunity for participants to reflect on current challenges: integrating the Web into marketing activities, adhering to the principle of sustainable development and enhancing the tourism offering.

"Canada Economic Development gives focus to its actions by working with Quebec's regional economic stakeholders. These men and women have in-depth knowledge of the unique characteristics and needs of the community in which they live and as such are our preferred partners. Actually, the Agency I head has a long history of supporting the Abitibi-Témiscamingue tourism industry. Tourism, as we know, is a key sector of the economy, and we applaud your efforts to create state-of-the-art products and services that meet the needs of visitors to the region," said Minister of State Lebel.

Tourism is a promising growth sector for the Abitibi-Témiscamingue, as are mining, agri-food processing and the transformation of forest products. It is therefore in these priority areas that Canada Economic Development has decided to focus its development efforts in the region. The financial assistance to Tourisme Abitibi-Témiscamingue has been awarded through the Community Diversification program.
