Government of Canada Grants $284,050 in Funding to Saint-Félicien CEGEP

SAINT-FÉLICIEN, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - June 11, 2010) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced $284,050 in non-repayable funding to Saint-Félicien CEGEP through the Business and Regional Growth program to initiate Phase I of a project to improve the competitiveness of regional forest companies.

Saint-Félicien CEGEP has broad expertise in the forest sector, which it intends to use to carry out this ground-breaking project. The process involves raising the awareness of companies in the secondary and tertiary wood processing sector about the relevance of integrating environmentally-sound management practices and developing a first generic database on the regional forest industry. This database will enable environmental life cycle analysis that will benefit forest SMEs by helping them identify their strengths and weaknesses and leverage their priorities for action to increase profitability.

"Today, as we focus on Canada's economic recovery and the forest sector rethinks its future, our region's small and medium-sized businesses need to embrace innovation to remain competitive. Corporate social and environmental responsibility will soon become essential to exporting forest products. Our regional companies must be prepared to take that route. The Saint-Félicien CEGEP project will help them become among the first to adjust to future international trade standards. In this context, Canada Economic Development believes it is entirely relevant to support this kind of structuring initiative for the second and tertiary wood processing sector," explained Minister of State Lebel.

This initiative is part of an overall approach aimed at giving Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean forest enterprises a competitive advantage that will bolster their strategic position in the global marketplace as manufacturers and exporters of green products. This project has vast potential: possible spinoffs could include the future establishment of a new Quebec Centre collégial de transfert technologique (technology transfer college centre) at Saint-Félicien CEGEP.

Canada Economic Development's Business and Regional Growth program strengthens the conditions conducive to the sustainable growth of Quebec's regions and small and medium-sized enterprises. Its aims include, among other things, helping businesses improve their performance, become more competitive, engage more heavily in innovation and develop new markets.
