Government of Canada Grants $94,456 in Funding to Club motoneige Saint-Barthelemy

SAINT-BARTHÉLEMY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Nov. 18, 2010) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced $94,456 in non-repayable financial assistance to Club motoneige Saint-Barthélemy through the Community Diversification program for the acquisition of a snow grooming machine to maintain snowmobiling trails.

The new grooming equipment will allow the organization to ensure that all users are able to enjoy a safe and accessible network of trails that meet snowmobile industry standards.

"The important role winter tourism plays in the Lanaudière economy is a well-established fact, and that is why Canada Economic Development is proud to lend its financial support to Club motoneige Saint-Barthélemy for this project," said the Minister of State.

Founded in 1974, Club motoneige Saint-Barthélemy is a non-profit organization that, with its 200 some members and four seasonal employees, handles the maintenance of more than 76 kilometres of snowmobile trails in the Autray Regional County Municipality (RCM), including two Trans-Québec trails (No. 3 trail between Louiseville and Saint-Cuthbert and No. 63 trail between Sainte-Ursule and Saint-Cuthbert) connecting the Lanaudière and Mauricie regions. The snowmobile club also maintains, between Îles de Sorel and Saint-Barthélemy, the only trail that provides access to the Lac Saint-Pierre archipelago, designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2000.

As part of its commitment to promoting tourism, the Government of Canada adopted an economic action plan in January 2009 which, among other things, calls for the allocation of $40 million in funding over two years to the Canadian Tourism Commission for the promotion of the country's industry on national and international markets.
