Government of Canada Helps Canadians Honour Veterans

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 25, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, announced today federal government support for community-led remembrance projects honouring Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"Our Veterans unite all Canadians as a source of pride. They help us remember why we are proud to be Canadian and the values that Canada stands for: peace, freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law," said Minister Thompson. "This is why our Government continues to support communities and organizations so they can honour their local military heroes."

Through its Community Engagement Partnership Fund, Veterans Affairs Canada provided funding to 11 groups across Canada-including Veterans' organizations and community groups. The remembrance projects ranged from annual commemorative ceremonies to a research contest for students on Canada's proud military history.

Applications to the Community Engagement Partnership Fund are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events may be eligible for funding.
