Government of Canada Helps Connect the North

YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES--(Marketwire - June 20, 2011) - The K'atl'odeeche First Nation (KFN) in the Northwest Territories will now have a faster local computer network and more technology support thanks to investments by the Government of Canada, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister of Health announced today.

"The Government of Canada recognizes that Information and Communications Technology infrastructure and qualified local support services are essential components of a growing, modern territorial economy," said Minister Aglukkaq. "These initiatives will provide immediate improvements to local network services, prepare the community for future technological advances, and help meet the growing demand for certified technological support in the territory."

The First Nation will use the CanNor investment of $275,000 over two years for several Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and capacity development initiatives. The projects include installing a local fibre-optic network connecting key community organizations, establishing an ICT support certification course delivered through Aurora College, and examining options for future broadband connection to southern Canada.

These investments are made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.

SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
