Government of Canada Helps Group in Southwestern Ontario Honour Veterans

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 25, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, announced today federal government support for a project in Southwestern Ontario to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Windsor Historical Society received funding for the unveiling ceremony of the refurbished Memorial Park Gates. The ceremony included a rededication of the Memorial Park Gates honouring the men and women in Windsor and Essex County who served in the First and Second World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Participating in remembrance events or activities helps us to better understand our proud history and the great debt we owe our nation's truest heroes," said Minister Thompson. "Our Government is proud to support organizations that are engaging people in their communities and honouring those who have served our country, and those who still serve Canada today."

"We are very grateful to the men and women who have served our country with remarkable courage and valour," said Minister Finley. "I am pleased that our Government is supporting initiatives like this one which allow us to thank our local heroes and to let them know that their service and their sacrifice will never be forgotten."

The Government of Canada is providing funding to 11 community-led remembrance projects across the country through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund. Applications to the Community Engagement Partnership Fund are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events may be eligible for funding.
