Government of Canada Improves Access to Heavy Equipment Operator Training

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwired - July 14, 2015) - Western Economic Diversification Canada

Barriers to employment in the booming construction industry will soon be reduced thanks to an investment of more than $130,000 announced today by the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

The Government of Canada's support to Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre Inc. (STSC) will support the purchase of vital equipment for the Introduction to Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) training program. The industry-recognized program will help meet market demand for skilled workers in the construction trades, while also benefiting youth and Aboriginal people facing barriers to well-paid jobs or having difficulty transitioning to full-time employment.

STSC will purchase an articulating boom lift and a truck to help train workers as well as to transport them to job sites for work experience.

Quick Facts

  • STSC will deliver two intakes of the HEO training program over the next two years, training 24 new workers.
  • With essential skills training, safety certification, hands-on experience with various heavy equipment and a one-week work practicum with the City of Saskatoon, students will be ready to join the workforce at industry pace by the end of 8 weeks.
  • STSC will use the articulating boom lift in all of its trades-based courses to complement classroom work received in Aerial Work Platform training; additional training to better prepare students for the labour market.
