Government of Canada Investment Connects Youth With Jobs in Forestry

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 6, 2013) - The Government of Canada is partnering with the forestry industry to connect youth with jobs in forestry and address skills shortages. The Greenest Workforce initiative was launched today at the Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada's annual PaperWeek Canada conference in Montreal.

"Our government's top priorities are job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity, so it is critical that we match the skills of Canadians, especially younger workers, with the needs of employers," said the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. "Through our partnership with the forestry industry, we are helping address their skills shortage by connecting youth with the practical on-the-job experience they need to succeed."

Launched by the Forest Products Association of Canada, the Greenest Workforce initiative has two components. The first is a new website, TheGreenestWorkforce.ca, which provides information on career opportunities in Canada's forestry industry. The second is the Green Dream Internship, a video competition that will award paid internships with forest products companies to eight students across the country.

The Greenest Workforce, which is partially funded through the Sectoral Initiatives Program, is one example of how the Government of Canada is helping youth develop the skills they need to get jobs now and prepare for the workforce of tomorrow.

The Sectoral Initiatives Program aims to address skills shortages in Canada by finding innovative ways to develop and share labour market information-a crucial step in helping job seekers find work and helping employers find employees with the skills they need.

The Youth Employment Strategy (YES) is yet another way that the Government of Canada is helping young people get the skills and work experience they need to make a successful transition to the workplace.

With an annual budget of more than $300 million, YES helps youth, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop employment skills, find jobs and stay employed. YES includes the Skills Link and Career Focus programs and the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, which will create 36 000 job opportunities for students this summer alone.

Employers can submit applications for this year's Canada Summer Jobs program until February 28, 2013. Applications for employers are available online at servicecanada.gc.ca/csj2013 and at Service Canada Centres.

Economic Action Plan 2012 is providing an additional $50 million over two years to enhance YES through a new initiative that will connect young Canadians with jobs that are in high demand and help them develop tangible skills and gain work experience.

Sectoral Initiatives Program

First announced in July 2011, the Sectoral Initiatives Program (SIP) aims to address skills shortages in key sectors of Canada's economy.

SIP funds national partnership-based projects that support the development and distribution of labour market information aimed at helping Canadians make more informed career and training decisions. SIP also connects Canadians to this information through the Working in Canada portal at www.workingincanada.gc.ca.

Youth Employment Strategy

Led by HRSDC in partnership with 10 other federal departments, the Youth Employment Strategy (YES) aims to help youth find and keep jobs. YES includes the Skills Link and Career Focus programs and the Canada Summer Jobs initiative.

Skills Link helps youth facing barriers to employment-including single parents, youth with disabilities and youth in rural and remote areas-to develop the skills and gain the experience needed to find a job, or the confidence to return to school.

Career Focus provides funding to employers to hire young post-secondary graduates to give them career-related work experience and help them acquire the skills that will enable them to transition into the job market.

Canada Summer Jobs provides funding for not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create summer job opportunities.
