Government of Canada Investment Fuels Direct Flights to Europe and Asia

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Dec. 15, 2011) - Plans for direct flights to Europe and Asia took off from Regina and Saskatoon today with an investment from the Government of Canada.

Western Economic Diversification Canada invested $30,000 to assist the Regina and Saskatoon Airport Authorities and Tourism Saskatchewan pursue new direct air routes to European and Asian destinations.

"Direct access to international markets is crucial to business success in today's global economy," said the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification. "Our Government's investment will increase international trade, create new jobs and strengthen Saskatchewan's tourism industry."

Tourism Saskatchewan will compile and assess the data acquired by key stakeholders from Regina and Saskatoon who attended the 2011 World Routes conference in Berlin. This analysis will better position the delegation attending the 2012 and 2013 World Routes conferences in its efforts to secure direct routes to Europe and Asia from Saskatchewan.

"This partnership between airport, tourism, and economic development authorities has demonstrated the importance and effectiveness of a multi-stakeholder approach to air route development," said Jonathan Potts, Tourism Saskatchewan's Director of Marketing. "Working together, we met with representatives from key airlines and drove home Saskatchewan's growing potential as an international destination. We will continue to build on that message until we are ultimately successful in bringing new air access to Saskatchewan."

Western Economic Diversification Canada in partnership with the provinces, industry associations and communities promotes the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and advances the interests of western Canadians in national decision-making.
