Government of Canada Invests in Alberta Magazine Publishers Association

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 19, 2010) - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Lee Richardson, Member of Parliament (Calgary Centre), today announced funding for the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association.

The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association is a non-profit organization of magazine publishers working in Alberta and their supporters. It works to sustain a healthy, thriving magazine industry by serving the people that publish, create, print, and distribute a uniquely Albertan view of the world.

"A strong periodical sector contributes to our economy and allows Canadians to tell and hear stories, opinions, and perspectives on the wide range of topics that interest them," said Minister Moore. "The Alberta Magazine Publishers Association is doing important work to support that sector."

"This Association provides a common forum for the exchange of ideas and information among publishers and those concerned with the magazine publishing industry in Alberta," said Mr. Richardson. "Its members make a valuable contribution to the diversity and vitality of the Canadian periodical sector."

"This funding is greatly valued," said Andrew Mah, Acting Executive Director. "It is critical to allowing us to support the growing regional magazine publishing industry in Alberta, an industry that gives life and voice to truly Albertan and Canadian stories, while enhancing the economic and cultural vibrancy of our region."

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $145,000 to the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association under the Collective Initiatives component of the Canada Periodical Fund (CPF). The Fund invests in associations like this one to help increase the overall health of the Canadian magazine and non-daily newspaper industries.
