Government of Canada Invests in Arts, Culture, and Heritage in New Brunswick

FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Aug. 6, 2009) - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced a million dollars in funding for 52 arts, culture, and heritage organizations in New Brunswick. The announcement was made at the Fredericton Playhouse in the presence of representatives of the organizations that will benefit from this funding, as well as other members of the arts community.

"Our Government understands the role arts and culture play in creating strong communities, a strong identity, and a prosperous economy," said Minister Moore. "Today's announcement means more festivals, community events, art exhibitions, and theatrical performances will be enjoyed throughout New Brunswick this year."

"This funding not only provides opportunities for emerging and professional local artists and artisans to express their creativity, it also allows the rich and diverse culture of our beautiful province-celebrating its 225th birthday this year-to be more widely shared," said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) and Member of Parliament (Fredericton).

"Financial support from the Government of Canada plays a vital role in the Playhouse's ability to present world-class artists on our stage," said Tim Years, Executive Director of the Fredericton Playhouse. "Fredericton audiences have the ability to experience some of Canada's and the world's finest artists through the participation of the federal government in our @theplayhouse program."

The Fredericton Playhouse, a major presenting organization in New Brunswick, is one of the recipients of the funding announced today for its Spotlight series.

The Government of Canada has provided funding totalling $1,092,340 under three programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage: Arts Presentation Canada (, Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage (, and the Museums Assistance Program (
