Government of Canada Invests in Renewable Power in New Brunswick

EDMUNDSTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Nov. 7, 2011) - The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and La Francophonie, on behalf of the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today that the Madawaska Hydrodam Modernization project will receive up to $2 million through the ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program.

"Today's announcement is another example of our Government's action to increase the supply of clean, renewable energy for Canadians," said Minister Valcourt. "This clean energy project at the Madawaska Hydrodam is helping to create high-quality jobs and a sustainable energy source for New Brunswick's future."

The Madawaska Hydrodam, operated by Edmundston Energy, a municipal utility company, was built to replace an old 1.5 MW hydroplant built in 1917. The project consists of a 4.05 megawatt small hydroelectric system and was commissioned on March 31, 2011. The project is expected to generate about 20 gigawatt hours of electricity a year that will be used by Edmundston Energy to power about 1,625 homes a year. During its construction, the dam created 90 jobs for local companies and service organizations.

"Being able to increase our renewable energy production, thanks to the Government of Canada's important contribution, is a way to increase the City of Edmundston's revenues, while reducing our impact on the environment. By doing so, Edmundston will remain in good financial shape," says Mayor Jacques Martin.

The $1.5-billion ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program provides a one cent per kilowatt-hour incentive over ten years, with the goal of increasing Canada's renewable electricity capacity by more than 4,000 megawatts — enough to power one million homes.
