Government of Canada Invests in the Lake Country ArtWalk

LAKE COUNTRY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 7, 2010) - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Ron Cannan, Member of Parliament (Kelowna–Lake Country), today announced funding for the Lake Country ArtWalk Planning Committee.

This funding will support the 17th annual Lake Country ArtWalk, a diverse festival showcasing original works of art and live shows by visual and performing artists living in the Okanagan Valley. ArtWalk, which is taking place September 11 and 12, 2010, will give local audiences in the community of Lake Country opportunities to attend dance, music and theatrical performances by Canadian artists. The festival also features local artwork displays in many forms, including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, and jewellery.

"The Lake Country ArtWalk will provide residents with access to a variety of cultural and artistic experiences, while strengthening community ties," said Minister Moore.

"Our Government is proud to support an organization that contributes so much to the community's vitality," said Mr. Cannan. "Events like this play an important role in engaging Canadians through performing and visual arts and in the expression and celebration of local heritage. Thank you to all the volunteers. Without them, events such as this would not be the artistic success that it is."

"We are very grateful to Canadian Heritage for the grant given to Lake Country ArtWalk! This is a community event put on by volunteers, so the funds from this grant provide important support for this arts festival," said Dr. Sharon McCoubrey, Art Walk Chairperson. "Receiving this grant enables us to offer a special arts festival for our community citizens and visitors. Specifically, this support allows us to do a good job of promoting the festival, and ensures that various needs are met to result in a high-quality event. Thank you Canadian Heritage!"

The Lake Country ArtWalk Planning Committee is a local non-profit organization dedicated to increasing opportunities for local artists and artisans to engage with their communities.

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $7,500 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
