Government of Canada Kick-Starts Entrepreneurship in Toronto

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 22, 2014) - Public Works and Government Services Canada

Bernard Trottier, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, was pleased to announce today that the Government of Canada has awarded a contract to Toronto company Morgan Solar Inc. for its innovation, the Savanna™ tracker, through the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP).

The Savanna™ tracker is a cost effective high-efficiency sun tracking system. Lightweight, self-stabilizing and robust this system will bring down the overall installation and development costs of solar panel installation. The turnkey system can be assembled with basic tools and without any prior knowledge of the product. The Savanna™ system eliminates the need for concrete foundations, cranes or other costly heavy machinery for both the setup and maintenance of the module.

The value of the contract awarded to Morgan Solar Inc. is approximately $305,000.

Quick Facts

  • The BCIP was launched in 2010 as a pilot program to connect Canadian companies with federal departments and agencies that have a need for innovative products and services. By selling to the federal government, businesses can demonstrate the value of their products and services, and potentially generate future sales to non-government customers in Canada and around the world.
  • To build on the early success of the BCIP, Economic Action Plan 2012 allocated additional funding for three years, starting in 2013. As of 2016, $40 million will be permanently dedicated to the BCIP annually.

Quotes

"Today I am pleased to announce great news about jobs and innovation in Toronto with this contract to Morgan Solar. In business for less than five years, this remarkable company is working hard to bring down the cost of solar energy and making great progress doing just that. Morgan Solar will now be able to get its products from the lab to the marketplace, which will directly benefit Canadian workers and their families."
