Government of Canada Plants Seeds to Help Floriculture Industry Bloom

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 14, 2011) - The Government of Canada is planting seeds that will allow Canada's floriculture greenhouse industry to grow and flourish. Today, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Diane Finley announced an investment of $126,000 to Flowers Canada Growers, on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.

"With Flowers Canada Growers, floral greenhouses across Canada have a forum through which to address issues of importance to their industry," said Minister Finley. "Our Government's support for this organization will allow the industry to thrive in Canada and enhance its competitiveness in global markets."

Flowers Canada Growers will use this investment to help develop market opportunities for Canadian producers in the United States. Activities planned include the updating of an export procedures manual, promoting the use of Canadian online auction systems to U.S. buyers, completing a market research study, and participating in U.S. and international trade shows.

"Agri-marketing has been a great support tool for our sector to develop a long-term strategy towards increasing exports," said Dean Shoemaker, Executive Director of Flowers Canada Growers. "International networking and promotion are helping our growers reinforce the quality and safety of Canadian-grown flowers and plants."

This federal investment is provided through the $88 million AgriMarketing program, under Growing Forward, which helps industry associations implement long-term international strategies which include activities such as international market development, consumer awareness and branding, and industry-to-industry trade advocacy.
