Government of Canada: Statement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 29, 2008) -

Ottawa, February 29, 2008
Statement by the Hon. Helena Guergis, PC, MP
Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport)
on discussion with Dr. Jacques Rogge

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to have a brief conversation with Dr. Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, to discuss the issue of women's ski jumping at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.

We had a good and productive discussion on the issue of women's ski jumping. During the course of our conversation, we exchanged facts on the issue and agreed that a meeting could be held to discuss the issue further.

Canada has long played a leadership role internationally to improve the worldwide status of women through sport.

While the Government of Canada believes women should be able to compete on an equal basis, decisions on these matters are made by the International Olympic Committee. We continue to look forward to seeing women's ski jumping as an Olympic sport in the future.

Our Government is proud of Canadian women athletes in each and every sport in which they compete as they represent Canada on the international stage.
