Government of Canada Supports 2009 Mansfield CIC---W (Wits End Horse Trial Event)

MANSFIELD, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 7, 2009) - On behalf of the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), the Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), today announced funding for the World Cup Qualification Event "2009 Mansfield CIC---W (Wits End Horse Trial)", taking place in Mansfield, Ontario.

"Our Government is proud to support Equine Canada and the World Cup Qualification Event and to contribute to the development of elite athletes. Their dedication to reach the top is a source of pride for all of us, and is inspiring many young Canadians," said Minister of State Lunn. "This event will build lasting legacies for the Canadian sport system from community-based sport right up to the high-performance level."

"I am pleased to announce this funding of $50,000 to host the 2009 Mansfield CIC---W," said Minister of State Guergis. "Hosting this event will bring a major social, cultural, and economic boost to Mansfield and will celebrate the talent of our Canadian riders."

The Mansfield CIC---W Event is held every year and attracts 78 athletes from 5 countries. The event is a Federation Equestre Internationale World Cup Qualifier for the equestrian sport of Eventing. Equine Canada is a member-based association that represents, promotes, and services Canada's equine community and industry. Its core areas of activity involve sport, equine health and welfare, education and safety, governance and marketing, representation and communication.

"This announcement has injected not only much needed funding, but an unrivalled boost of enthusiasm amongst the hundreds of committee members, volunteers, competitors, spectators and vendors involved in the event."

The Government of Canada believes sport strengthens individuals, as well as our communities by bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds. The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium.
