Government of Canada Supports 2011 Tribute to Veterans

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 27, 2011) - More than 300 Veterans and their families gathered today for the 2011 Tribute to Veterans in Ottawa. The event started off with a motorcycle ride from Gatineau to Ottawa after which the participants proceeded to the National War Memorial to pay tribute to fallen soldiers and peacekeepers.

"Our Government is proud to support events that honour the sacrifices of our Peacekeeping Veterans who have given so much in the defence of peace around the world. Today's gathering ensures that the important contributions of our Veterans are recognized and remembered," said Minister Blaney about the tribute.

The 2011 Tribute to Veterans is organized by Veterans UN/NATO, a group founded in 2008. Primarily composed of modern-day Veterans, it aims to combat loneliness among former Canadian Forces members. The group has members across Canada and in France, Germany and New Caledonia.

Veterans Affairs Canada has been able to assist with the organization of today's event through a financial contribution of up to $7,200. This contribution was made possible through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund.

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding for non-profit organizations, educational institutions and any other groups interested in planning remembrance initiatives. Funding applications are accepted at all times.
