Government of Canada Supports Celebrate Canada! Committee for New Brunswick

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - June 24, 2008) - Canada, its history, and its heritage will be celebrated in a number of New Brunswick communities, thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada.

Mike Allen, Member of Parliament (Tobique-Mactaquac), on behalf of the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for the Celebrate Canada! Committee of New Brunswick.

An amount of $50,000 will help the committee to promote, encourage, and coordinate the organization of eleven days of celebrations, held from June 21 to July 1, 2008, as part of the Celebrate Canada! initiative. Thanks to this support, New Brunswick residents will be able to take part in activities marking National Aboriginal Day on June 21, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day-the national holiday for Québecois-on June 24, Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27, and Canada Day on July 1.

"Celebrate Canada! is the perfect opportunity to discover and appreciate our different communities and recognize their important contribution to the building of the Canada we know," said Minister Verner. "The Government of Canada recognizes the important contribution made by the Celebrate Canada! Committee of New Brunswick to the presentation of activities that are part of the Celebrate Canada! initiative."

"Celebrate Canada! brings citizens from every part of the country together to celebrate and express their attachment to Canada and their pride in being Canadian," said Mr. Allen. "The Government of Canada is proud to support activities throughout New Brunswick that celebrate our country, our culture, and our history."

"The support we receive from the Department of Canadian Heritage is essential to the activities of the Celebrate Canada! Committee for New Brunswick," said Diane Bormke, President of the Committee. "It enables our committee to act as a catalyst for Celebrate Canada! events in New Brunswick and to provide leadership and support to the volunteers organizing activities in the province during that period of festivities."

The Government of Canada has provided this financial support under the Celebrate Canada! program, which aims to enhance pride in Canada by encouraging the participation of its citizens in Celebrate Canada! activities being held from June 21 to July 1.
