Government of Canada Supports Montreal's Hosting of PGA Champions Tour

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Feb. 4, 2010) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of $2,350,000 in non-repayable funding to the Fondation Les legendes du Golf for the marketing and staging of the Champions Tour from 2010 to 2012. The greater Montreal area will have the honour of hosting this annual tournament for the next three years.

The Fondation Les legendes du golf was established by Synchro Golf, a company that provides a full array of golf services, to organize an annual tournament within the PGA Champions Tour.

"This sporting event is unique in Canada by virtue of its scope and reputation. PGA tournaments generate major economic spinoffs, drawing a select group of fans from here and abroad who love to follow these international competitions," stated the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the Montreal region. "In lending its financial support to the Champions Tour golf tournaments, which promise to serve as a powerful economic lever, the Government of Canada is helping to stimulate the Montreal economy and further the city's reach and reputation. In so doing, our government is demonstrating once again its commitment to sustaining and promoting the vitality of Canada's communities."

"The prestigious Champions Tour, which joins the other major sporting events to be held in Montreal, will help multiply the economic spinoffs generated by all of these events and further strengthen the city's reputation on the international stage. This funding from Canada Economic Development is awarded through the Tourism component of its Community Diversification program, an initiative that helps communities build their drawing power and attract a greater number of tourists from outside the province," commented Minister of State Lebel.
