Government of Canada Supports Quebec's Aluminium Industrial Cluster

MONTRÉAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Oct. 21, 2013) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, took the opportunity while attending the first meeting of the Quebec Aluminium Industrial Cluster today to announce that the organization has been granted funding to stimulate and promote Quebec expertise in the aluminium industry and improve the competitiveness of businesses operating in the sector.

"As stated in the Speech from the Throne, economic growth and job creation are our government's number one priorities. By increasing support to the aluminium sector, a pillar of the Canadian economy, we are showing our determination to do all it takes to equip ourselves with the means to fulfil our ambitions," said Minister Lebel.

The mission of the Quebec Aluminium Industrial Cluster (QAIC) is to build synergy and connections among the various actors in the aluminium industrial chain and end users by focusing on training, innovation and technological development to increase aluminium processing and applications. The QAIC intends to implement its 2013-2015 Action Plan to raise the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises in the sector through the accelerated design, development, adoption, commercialization and export of aluminium products. These actions are expected to have a positive impact on the development of this critical industrial sector. In collaboration with its partners, the cluster has made it its first priority to support the activities of equipment manufacturers and optimize aluminium use in the transportation, construction and aerospace sectors.

This assistance, granted in the form of a $500,000 non-repayable financial contribution until 2015, has been awarded through Canada Economic Development's Quebec Economic Development Program.
