Government of Canada Supports Remembrance in Strathcona County, Alberta

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 16, 2010) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), and Tim Uppal, Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Sherwood Park, announced last week up to $1,568 in federal government support for a project in Sherwood Park, Alberta to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"Our Government is proud to support community events like these to ensure that Canadians never forget the sacrifices made by our Veterans," said Minister Blackburn. "The men and women who served our country deserve to be honoured for their great contributions and achievements. These events provide meaningful ways to bring youth and communities together in remembrance."

The Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans (ANAVETS) in Canada - Strathcona Unit #99 organized and hosted a traditional Remembrance Day ceremony and post-ceremony luncheon with musical entertainment on November 11, 2010. The ceremony was held at the local cenotaph and included a parade, wreath-laying, poems read by youth and special recognition of Veterans. Over 2,400 people were expected to attend including youth, Veterans, dignitaries and members of other Veterans' groups.

"ANAVETS is one of Canada's oldest and well known Veterans' organizations," said Member of Parliament Tim Uppal. "Their work to unite and celebrate our Veterans can be felt from coast-to-coast. I commend them for their continued efforts."

Applications to the Community Engagement Partnership Fund are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events may be eligible for funding.
