Government of Canada Supports Skills for Employment Training Programs in Africa

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 30, 2010) - Following a meeting with the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC), the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced 36 projects that will provide vocational training for African youth and help to establish strong technical and vocational education and training systems in Mozambique, Senegal and Tanzania.

"Youth are key to a successful developing world and vocational training is one of the best tools to help them build a better future. CIDA's Skills for Employment initiative will help African youth by giving them the necessary training to access greater opportunities for jobs and stable incomes," Minister Oda said. "The Government of Canada is proud to work with our Canadian community colleges to advance CIDA's Stimulating Sustainable Economic Growth strategy [http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/acdi-cida/ACDI-CIDA.nsf/eng/FRA-101515146-QKD] and help build the skilled workforce necessary for economic growth in developing countries."

"Colleges and institutes produce graduates with the advanced skills Canada's employers and communities need," says James Knight, President and CEO of ACCC. "Supporting partner countries' efforts to develop education for employment is a powerful development approach that will contribute to sustainable economic activity in Africa. This program also brings benefits to Canada by contributing to the internationalization of faculty and students on our own campuses."

Investing in people to improve their capacity to seize economic opportunities is a key element of CIDA's Stimulating Sustainable Economic Growth strategy. Twenty-five Canadian colleges and institutes, with their African counterparts, will establish new curricula, teaching practices and training programs that respond to labour needs in the fields of agriculture, agri-food, construction, fisheries, marine and port activities, mining, and tourism. Educational institutions in Mozambique, Senegal and Tanzania will increase their capacity to work with employers and provide training that meets employers' needs. Approximately 2,000 people will receive training through this program.

The Government of Canada is contributing $20 million to the ACCC's Education for Employment (EFE) [http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/cidaweb/cpo.nsf/vLUWebProjEn/34D3DB42B3256600852574BF00373508?OpenDocument] program in Africa, which is part of CIDA's Skills for Employment initiative.
