Government of Canada Supports the 2011 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup

STONEHAM, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Feb. 18, 2011) - Canada Snowboard will again this year be able to count on the support of the Government of Canada to host the 2011 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup, the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), announced today.

The LG Snowboard FIS World Cup is held every year and attracts more than 250 athletes from 18 countries. The event is taking place from February 18 to 20, 2011, in Stoneham, Quebec.

"Our Government takes great pride in supporting the 2011 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup," said Minister of State Lunn. "I wish all participants, athletes from abroad, and those from all over Canada the very best time at the World Cup. I am convinced they will enjoy the hills here at the beautiful Stoneham Resort. Hosting international events such as this one has positive economic and social impacts for Canadian communities and benefits our Canadian athletes and the sport community as a whole."

"The continued support from the Government of Canada is critical in the successful delivery of world-class sporting events in Canada. We are thankful for the contributions from the Government of Canada, through Sport Canada," said Steven Hills, Chief Executive Officer (interim) at Canada Snowboard. "Canada Snowboard has an excellent history of hosting international events, which will include the upcoming 2013 Snowboard FIS World Championships in Stoneham, Quebec."

The organizing committee leading the 2011 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup is Coupe du Monde de surf des neiges de Québec, a Quebec-based non-profit organization. Now in its twelfth year of hosting the FIS World Cup, the Organizing Committee has the goal of continuing the success of the competition and its positive impact on the community, with a focus on expanding its outreach to the community and youth snowboard programs.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $250,000 was provided to Canada Snowboard for the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup through Sport Canada's Hosting Program.
