Government of Canada Supports the 2015 Edmonton Summer World University Games Bid

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 20, 2009) - The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), today announced funding of up to $191 million to invest in sport infrastructure, legacy initiatives, and operations associated with staging the 2015 Summer World University Games.

"Our Government is excited to welcome the world's top student athletes to Edmonton in 2015, and we are working with the Government of Alberta, the City of Edmonton, the University of Alberta, Canadian Interuniversity Sport, and the 2015 Edmonton Bid Committee to ensure the success of this international bid," said Minister of State Lunn. "I am eager to participate in the Edmonton Bid Committee's final bid presentation in Brussels and bring the World University Games back to Canada."

"If Edmonton wins the right to host the 2015 Summer Universiade, it will provide an immediate economic stimulus and create thousands of jobs," said Eric P. Newell, President of the Canadian 2015 Summer Universiade Bid Committee. "We certainly would not have been able to develop a bid this far without strong support from the federal government and all of our partners and we are very pleased with the announcement today."

"I would like to recognize the hard work of the Edmonton Bid Committee and their efforts in presenting a strong bid," said the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament (Edmonton-Spruce Grove). "Edmonton has a valued legacy of welcoming the world in the past, and there is no doubt that hosting the 2015 Summer World University Games will once again demonstrate our world-class athletic facilities, our strong volunteer base, and our principles of honesty, integrity, fairness, and respect."

The Summer World University Games are an international sporting and cultural festival that is staged every two years. The Games are open to all student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28. The host city for the 2015 Summer World University Games will be announced on May 23, 2009, in Brussels, Belgium. Edmonton is competing against Taipei, Taiwan, and Gwangju, South Korea.
